Background Information about the Lloyd Center
The Lloyd Center for the Environment, with its spectacular 82-acre nature preserve overlooking the scenic Slocum River estuary, offers many innovative outreach programs.
Aquarium exhibits present unique views of live freshwater and saltwater species of fish and other marine critters. The Center is also home to a fascinating collection of live local reptiles, many representing endangered species, being “head-started” and readied for release back into their natural environment. At the always popular touch-tank, youngsters learn the hands-on joy of socializing with gentle spider crabs, elusive minnows, sea stars (starfish), whelks, hermit crabs, periwinkles and mussels.
The top-floor Osprey Room Observatory, with its magnificent views of the Elizabeth Islands and Buzzards Bay, has been designated by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs as one of the Commonwealth’s top-fifteen “Special Places”. Through telescopes, one can get a close-up view of formerly endangered Ospreys, and their chicks, nesting on platforms erected by members of the Center’s research staff.
The Visitor Center is open from 10 to 4, Tuesday through Saturday, and on Sundays, June - September, free of charge. Trails are open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week.

Young Naturalist Summer Programs – 2013
The Young Naturalist Program is a way for children ages 5-7 (entering K – 2nd grade) to enjoy a fun-filled summer of exploration, discovery and wonder of the natural world around them. Throughout the summer, children will learn about the amazing creatures and habitats around the Lloyd Center using hands-on games, activities, crafts and trail walks.
Whether looking in the sea, sky, forests or ponds, we will be sure to have an exciting day experiencing the remarkable things in the world around us. Children may participate in a half-day session or extend their fun into a full-day adventure. Each session of the summer will incorporate new activities and crafts, so feel free to sign up your child for as many programs as you like!
Outreach Programs for children, adults, and the whole family, offered year round (below schedule is through May 31)
Family Program: GET LOST! - Get Lost in the Woods! This class will introduce children and families to how a compass works. After a brief introduction families will have a chance to create a treasure map for each other using their newly developed orienteering skills. There may even be treasures at the end of their journey.
Preschool Program – SPRING HAPPENINGS! - Lloyd Center preschool outreach programs lead children and parents on an outdoor adventure, build on children’s curiosity in the outdoors and use hands-on activities to explore the world around us. This April discover all the amazing things happening in the spring. Learn about how trees grow and what animals are doing as the weather warms. Lloyd center staff will use exciting stories, games, crafts, animal encounters and walks on our nature trails to discover all the amazing things happening during the spring.
Adult Program: CRITTER HUNT – UNDER A LOG - Searching for critters isn’t just for kids. On this guided hike learn about all the animals that make a home under a log and their important role in the forest.
Family Hike: FROGS AT NIGHT - Discover the different frogs that live in the area, learn their calls and explore the woods at night to discover where these creatures are hiding. Games and activities will help us to understand the life cycles of these creatures. Be sure to dress for the weather and bring your imagination to this fun filled night of amphibians.
This is a hike for all of you early birds. Join a Lloyd Center naturalist on a walk through our property to watch what happens in the morning as the forest wakes up. Bring binoculars if you have them and be ready to spot some of the wildlife in our area as they come to life in the early morning.
Family Programs: Under a Log
Join us at the Lloyd Center for a fun filled excursion to discover the animals that live beneath our feet. Roll logs, uncover leaves and dig in the dirt to uncover all the creepy, crawly critters that live on the forest floor and the importance that they have in the forest ecosystem.
Family Program: Life in a Stream
Dust off your rain boots and make your way down to the Lloyd Center to learn all about the critters that live in streams. Search beneath the rocks to discover and identify the insects and crustaceans that live in the water around us while learning about the adaptations that allow them to live in these fast moving environments. Be sure to bring shoes and clothes that you don’t mind getting wet!
Adult Program: Salt Marsh Biology
Put on your boots and join us at the Lloyd Center for a walk through one of the many salt marshes on our property. During this program have a chance to explore the marsh, catalog the species that live there and learn about the importance of the salt marsh habitat.
